Li Wei is a young boy who lives in China. Every day, his family eats rice with their meals. His mom cooks rice for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. But Li Wei is different. He likes vegetables more than rice.
At dinner, his mom gives him a big bowl of rice. There are also vegetables on the table—broccoli, carrots, and spinach. Li Wei smiles when he sees the vegetables. "Can I have more broccoli, please?" he asks.
His mom is surprised. "You don’t want more rice?" she asks.
"No, I like vegetables better," Li Wei says. He puts the broccoli on his plate and eats happily. His mom laughs. "Most children love rice, but you love vegetables!" she says.
At school, Li Wei eats lunch with his friends. They all have bowls of rice, but Li Wei has a plate of mixed vegetables. His friends look at him. "Why don’t you eat rice?" one friend asks.
"I just like vegetables more," Li Wei says.
His friends shrug and eat their rice. Li Wei enjoys his vegetables. He eats carrots, cabbage, and green beans. They make him strong and healthy.
When Li Wei’s family goes to the market, his mom buys a big bag of rice. "Do you want anything, Li Wei?" she asks.
"Can we get more spinach?" Li Wei asks. His mom smiles and buys the spinach.
Li Wei knows that rice is important in his family, but he is happy that he can enjoy his vegetables too. Every day, he looks forward to eating fresh, colorful vegetables with his meals.
