17. The Legend of Yu the Great

Long ago in China, there is a big flood. Water covers the land. The rivers are too full, and they overflow. People lose their homes. They have no food. Everyone is scared.

A man named Yu wants to help. "I will stop the flood," he says. Yu’s father tries before but cannot stop the water. Yu thinks of a new way.

Yu looks at the rivers and mountains. He does not block the water. He digs channels to guide the water to the ocean. "The water needs a path," he says.

Yu works for many years. He digs day and night. He does not go home. "I will not stop until the water is gone," he says.

People see Yu working hard. They join him. Together, they dig more channels. Slowly, the water goes away. The land dries, and people can grow food again.

After many years, the flood is gone. The rivers are calm, and the land is safe. People are happy. They thank Yu. "You are a hero," they say.

The emperor hears about Yu. He asks Yu to be the new leader. Yu becomes the first king of the Xia dynasty. He rules with kindness and wisdom.

Yu the Great is remembered for saving the land and helping the people. His story is told for many years as a lesson in hard work and courage.
